The Niagara men's basketball team fell short in Sunday's game against the Manhattan Jaspers, falling 87-70. But, there was plenty to cheer about as the nationally televised MAAC Game of the Week, broadcast on ESPN3 from the Gallagher Center, featured the return of one of Niagara's own, Calvin Murphy.
The crowd roared as a banner was revealed in honor of Murphy's achievements. The room came to a standing ovation in honor of the only Purple Eagle to make it to the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.
It is both an honor and a privilege to see such a welcoming crowd and to have my name placed along the former great players of Niagara, Murphy said.
Murphy's magic touch, which was seen in his play at NU and in his professional career, was missing from the current Purple Eagles' squad Sunday against Manhattan. What was a pretty evenly fought first half turned into a substantial Manhattan lead, thanks to the Jaspers' high shooting percentage and ability to consistently hit the three ball.
In true Vincentian spirit, however, Niagara battled back from a 21-point deficit to narrow the gap to 11. The Jaspers, however, proved too much.
The men fought hard today; sometimes thing just don't fall your way, Murphy said. You have to look at the big picture. Though this was a tough loss, it was only one game.
The Purple Eagles will look to avenge their loss on Friday, Feb. 3, in a game against MAAC rival Fairfield.
Niagara's next home game is scheduled for Thursday, Feb. 9, against Siena. First tip is at 7 p.m.
Come on out to support your school and show your NU pride.
As always, the game will be held at the Gallagher Center, and tickets will be available pre-sale and at the door prior to the game.
